003 BSc Civil Engineering, bachelor

Target Group and Admission Requirements

General admission requirements + 2FY and 3MX (maths and physics), pre-course, 2 year technical college or practical competence, TRES.

Aim of the Programme

Our objective is to train engineers who can solve practical problems in fields such as land use planning, mapping and surveying, water supplies, drainage and transportation engineering. The programme also provides subjects which are more general, such as construction-, production- and house-building techniques and project management. IT is used extensively, particularly DAK.

You may also choose a specialisation in ICT or Economics and Management.

As a civil engineer, you may work in engineering-consultation offices, in construction and contracting firms, and in the public sector. Tasks may involve static calculations, construction diagrams, project descriptions with cost estimates, expansion plans, management and economics. In the public sector, duties may be associated with local plans, surveying, road construction, water supplies, sewers and drainage, renovation or questions of pollution. Depending on your choice of elective subjects, you may also work in construction, community planning or as a construction consultant.

Further Education opportunities

Upon completing the programme as a civil engineer (BSc Civil Engineering), you may seek admission to a two-year Master’s programme (civil-engineer programme) at Telemark University College or other university colleges in Norway and abroad.

It is possible to specialise in Economics and Management through the following modifications to the standard course of study:

Specialisation in Economics and Management:

  • VBØ5006 Organisation and Management replacing BY5106 Road Planning and VBØ5106 Product Development and Marketing and VBØ5206 Project or BY5006 Concrete and Walls replacing BY5206 Roads, Water and Drainage w/Project in the 5th semester.
  • VBØ6006 TQM and HSE replacing elective subjects in the 6th semester.

BY5006 Concrete and Walls or IA5006 Database Systems or VBØ5106 Product Development and Marketing and PRH606 Main Project may be replaced with FB5106 Student Business Venture. PRH606. The Main Project may, in combination with an elective subject, be credited for 15 ECTS by application to the study coordinator. FBV5006 Matematics III and FBV6006 Mathematics IV are recommended for students who intend to continue on to a Master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Technology. One may apply to have other courses approved as replacements for elective subjects at Telemark University College and other institutions of education.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The Bachelor’s programme at the The Faculty of Technology is project-oriented, that is, many of the courses are conducted as projects. This pedagogical method gives you greater responsibility for your own learning as well as experience with problem analysis, seeking information and problem solving. Work is done in groups, often in close cooperation with local businesses. The group produces a project report which is submitted, presented and defended in an oral examination. Most subjects are taken over one semester with various tests and final examinations.

You will be offered an opportunity to study abroad during the programme. We have exchange agreements with colleges and universities in Belgium, England, France, Italy, China, Nepal, Portugal, Sri-Lanka, Spain, Germany and the USA.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
