Target Group and Admission Requirements

General Admission requirements + Physics I and Mathematics R1 + R2, or pre-course, or 2-year technical trade school.

Aim of the Programme

This branch of study provides a broad introduction to important aspects of IT and automation. Pertinent topics include programming; databases; computer networks; measurement-, regulating- and controlling-technology; industrial computer technology; web-based systems; PLC etc.

Emphasis will also be placed on a basic understanding of various types of processes; electrical, mechanical and chemo-technical, how they are monitored and regulated through the use of modern computer systems, and how programmes for such applications are written.

Using project-based training and laboratory exercises, the students are given an opportunity to work with both practical and theoretical aspects of applications ranging from user-oriented to industrial systems. In the projects, you will also learn problem-solving methodology and systematic work methods.

With an engineering education, students will be able to work in fields such as system-development, programming, industrial computer technology, computer networks, robot-technology, sales, consultancy, microprocessor-based systems, process regulation, process monitoring etc. The programme will provide general, fundamental theory and experience which will be applicable to a wide spectrum of fields within IT and automation.

You may seek admission to the 2-year Master’s programme (civil-engineer programme) Systems and Control Engineering at Telemark University College or Master`s programmes at other university colleges and universities in Norway or abroad.

IA5506 Project IA5 in the 5th semester and PRH606 Main Project in the 6th semester may be replaced by FB5106 Student Business Venture.

FBV5006 Mathematics III is recommended for students who wish to study for a Master’s degree in technological subjects.

Students may apply to have other courses approved as replacements for elective courses at Telemark University College and other institutions of education.


Teaching and Learning Methods

The Bachelor’s study programmes at the Department of Technology are project-oriented, which means that a large proportion of the topics are taught through projects. This pedagogical method gives the students a greater degree of responsibility for their own learning, and experience in problem analysis, information research and problem-solving. Each project is carried out by a group of students, often in cooperation with a local business. The group produces a project report which is submitted, presented and defended in an oral examination. Most of the courses last one semester, with periodic tests and a final evaluation/examination.

Students have the opportunity to study abroad during the programme. Telemark University College has exchange agreements with colleges and universities in Belgium, England, France, Italy, China, Nepal, Portugal, Sri-Lanka, Spain, Germany and the USA. Students who have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering are qualified to apply directly for enrolment on the Master’s degree programme at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology dependent on certain conditions.
