Target Group and Admission Requirements

Trade-school education with certificate of competence based on general and process chemistry or laboratory subjects.

Aim of the Programme

A degree in gas and energy technology will provide a basic introduction to the fields of general chemistry and process chemistry, before the students proceed to gas and energy technology. Laboratory exercises and computer simulations will constitute part of this specialisation. The programme will provide insight into the subject area with regard to the use of gas for heating and energy production (including gas-driven power plants and C02 treatment) and as a raw material for the chemical industry. The programme will provide familiarity and practical experience with safety analyses in process and offshore industry (HAZOP). It will also provide students with a practical understanding of applied process-simulation.

As an engineer in gas and energy technology, you will be able to work with process development, data control and product development in process industries. Other potential employment opportunities may be found in health institutions and various control organs, and within areas such as working conditions, environmental conservation and the offshore industry.

Further Education opportunities

Upon completing the programme (BSc Civil Engineering), you may seek admission to a two-year Master’s programme in Energy and Environmental Technology or Process Technology (civil-engineer programme) at Telemark University College or Master's programmes in technology at other university colleges and universities in Norway and abroad.

KJ5506 Project KJ5 and PRH606 Main Project KJ6 in the 6th semester may be replaced by FB5206 Student Business Venture.

FBV5006 Mathematics III and FBV6006 mathematics IV are recommended for students who wish to study for a Master’s degree in technological subjects.

Students may apply to have other courses approved as replacements for elective courses at Telemark University College and other institutions of education.


This is a new professional and pedagogical plan adapted to the student’s vocational background and training. The programme compensates for inadequate skills in mathematics, physics, Norwegian and English by bypassing some of the basic technical courses and elective courses in the programme. In the chemistry subjects the Y-VEI students will be integrated with those who have met entrance requirements through their general upper-secondary education.

Many of the courses include software such as Hysys for process simulation, Fluent (fluid dynamics) and Maple (mathematics); courses will also include laboratory exercises.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The Bachelor degree programmes at the Faculty of Technology are project oriented, that is, many of the courses are conducted as projects. This pedagogical method provides students with greater responsibility for their own learning as well as experience with problem analysis, seeking information and problem solving. Work is done in groups, often in close cooperation with local businesses. The group produces a project report which is submitted, presented and defended in an oral examination. Most subjects are taken over one semester and include continuous assessment and final assessment and examinations.
