515 Norwegian Language and Civilization for Foreign Students

Target Group and Admission Requirements

The study programme is aimed at foreign students who plan to study in Norway.
Applicants must fulfill general admission requirements at a university college, which includes the requirement of English proficiency according to specified guidelines. No skills in Norwegian are required in order to gain admission to the programme.

Aim of the Programme

The study programme aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills required for studies at Norwegian university colleges and universities. It will provide students with general skills in the Norwegian language. It will also focus on how students may adapt and adjust to Norwegian society.

The study programme focuses on the following subject areas: Norwegian language and Norwegian civics. During the course of the programme these two areas will be integrated as far as possible. The main focus will be on the Norwegian language, particularly practical language skills.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures, group work, exercises and homework. Attendance is obligatory. Students must participate in at least 80% of the teaching and pass at least 80% of all the homework assignments to be allowed to take the final examination. The programme also includes mandatory excursions and a “winter-week” in the mountains. Students will incur expenses of roughly NOK 1500 – 2000.

Assessment Methods

The study programme will conclude with two written examinations, a term paper and an oral examination in which each examination part counts equally. All examination parts must be passed in order to receive a passing mark for the study programme. A final grade will be given for the completed study programme.
The examinations will be assessed using a scale from A to F, where A is the highest passing mark, and E the lowest passing mark.
